בִּין Biyn Strong’s #995; verb, 169 occurrences
Pronunciation: (bene phonetic)
Word origin: a primitive root
Definition: to discern, understand, to perceive, to instruct/teach.
This verb is special to me, as it’s definition and/or use in Scripture is not an understanding merely for the storage of knowledge, but for use/application. To be wise in life choices, actions, thinking, as well as words you use. Yada, Strong’s #3045, is used to convey perception via the senses. Yada is used 944 times in Scripture, and has a broad variety of meanings. Nakar, 5234 is also similar, but it conveys intelligent knowledge of the reason, i.e. success comes from applying common sense, being circumspect, or having insight or displaying prudence.
From Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance it’s defined as attend, consider, be cunning, direct, diligent, eloquent, feel. As a primitive root, it’s understanding by distinguishing (or separate mentally i.e., (generally understand – attend, consider, be cunning, diligently, discern, eloquent, feel, inform, instruct, have intelligence, know, look well to, mark, perceive, be prudent, regard, (can) skillfully teach, think, (cause, make to, get, give, have) understand(-ing), view, (deal) wise (-ly, man).
Verses I looked up, and are worth reviewing/meditating on your own include:
1 Kings 3:9
Job 6:30
Psalm 58:9
Psalm 119:34
Proverbs 7:7, 28:5, 29:19
Daniel 1:17, 12:8
Isaiah 6:9, 29:14
I am sure there are many more verses you can find with this exact root word, being that there are 169 occurrences in the New American Standard Bible. Might be more in other translations, but that is what I use for my studies.
Let’s all Biyn His Spirit working in our lives, all around us, and that we might here His instruction to act on, in whatever situation we are in. God is always at work and He has a purpose in everything that happens.
The references I used can be found in MY BIBLE. (yep, liked there for you). This particular study Bible is amazing as a reference/study Bible for both Theology students, and those who just love His Word.
