Surfer’s Chapel, Huntington Beach: Pastor/Teacher Bill White

[from a sermon series started 6/8/1996, at my home church in Huntington Beach, Ca.]

Chemical innovations in WW2 created an interest in making surfboards. At this time forward, Board making technology has gone future tech. [this was originally preached in 1996, the technology has evolved even more since]

Resin = A clear plastic “honey”-like substance, very gooey

Catalyst = slows down or speeds up a chemical reaction while no breakdown occurs.

Resin = Similar to us, physically, spiritually, and mentally

Spiritually:

Psalm 51:5-7 Sinful at birth, from conception

5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,

And in sin my mother conceived me.

6 Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,

And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.

7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Ephesians 2:1-2 Before Christ, we were dead

1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 

Catalyst = Laminate, Hot-coat, gloss-coat: all use same catalyst

We need a catalyst to active our spiritual resin.

No matter our type of resin: i.e. our former sinful ways, to become all that we’ve been designed to be we need a spiritual catalyst.

HOLY SPIRIT:

John 3:5-8 It gives Life.

5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Titus 3: 3-6 We don’t get what we deserve!

3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 

Like a catalyst, the Holy Spirit works in our lives and does it’s business!

Romans 8:6 Deliverance from Bondage, through the Spirit’s work.

6For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, [this whole chapter is one of my most favorites, it’s worth a read]

Revelation 1:5-6 Jesus our King

…and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood— 6 and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 2:4 Amazing Grace

 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

2 Corinthians 5:17 Old has gone, new has come.

17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

[I attended Surfer’s Chapel in the mid-90’s, right before moving to New Mexico. Everyone at Surfer’s Chapel either surfed regularly, or were married/dating/or otherwise related to someone who did. As a result everyone who attended SC knew how surfboards are made. Surfboards, at the time and probably even now in some places (I’m not in the scene anymore, so it could have changed over the 3-decades I’ve been in New Mexico). Surfboards, basically were/are foam shapes covered with fiberglass and sealed with catalyst-activated resin. Therefore this sermon, and the series, was on-point with the fellowship in attendance.]
